Current toolbox for learning is outdated

You must learn to read, study your native and some other languages, master mathematics and physics. Put interest in reading literature that includes historical events and important events that fit in to the existing narrative. Learn about different religions and what they stand for. Set a development plan for how you can increase your own development and eventually become a law abiding and productive cog in the system.

A story that fit for many of us and that builds a loyal workforce when the studies are completed, regardless on the level of achievement. Some though will not be able to coop and will have to struggle and fight for the rest of their lives to get along. And any new ideas of to handle the situation we are facing with drought, floods, war and environmental degradation is not commonly present. The curriculum is set by the same people that created the challenges in the first place.

Of course there are schools, high schools and universities that put in a lot of effort to handle the challenges we are facing right now, and the challenges lies just around the corner. But it is not enough and the measure most likely are missing some important building blocks.

The toolbox we, the grown ups, must provide our children, our adolescent , and our young grown ups need to be expanded. Creativity and openness are essential parts of solving complex problems. Conventional logic works really well for solving discrete problems with finite answers.

The distinctive characteristics of many of the problems facing us is that they are wicked, or complex. The challenges of today are intertwined of different topics and flavors and consequently they need to be adressed by other means than conventional logic.

This goes for environmental areas, as well as inequality, diminishing ability to keep focus for a longer period of time as examples. My belief is that we need to give the children, the adolescents , and the young grown ups new tools as early as possible. There is a need to make a boost on all levels at the same time. There is not time to let it take another 25 years before the youngest children enter the working life.

One example that would be really cheap and simple to introduce is to learn our young ones how to be mindful. Be able to get to know the physical and physiological parts of their bodies. Be able to calm the mind from impressions and to find stillness. Learn the young ones how to handle the constant bombardment of information, likes, images and com ment that are their normal day to day events. Without stillness it is hard to keep focus on anything.

During sessions of mindfulness training it is possible to have discussions about the difference of the expression ”what's in it for me” and the expresson ”I learned this, how can it be beneficial for us”. The wicked problems can only be handled collectively.

Next article will look in to other tools that can be of great significant importance for developing creativity and perspective kind of thinking.
